If your Breville Barista Express has no water coming out, the fastest way to diagnose it is to determine where water flow has stopped. A machine with no flow from the group head, hot-water outlet and steam wand has a different problem from a machine that only stops when a coffee-filled portafilter is installed.
Quick diagnosis
| Symptom | Most likely area to check |
|---|---|
| No water from any outlet | Water tank seating, empty tank, airlock/priming issue, scale or pump/flow fault |
| Water flows without portafilter but not through coffee | Grind too fine, too much coffee, blocked basket |
| No water from group head but hot-water outlet works | Group-head/basket blockage or brew-circuit issue |
| Weak flow from every outlet | Scale, tank/filter restriction or internal flow problem |
1. Remove the portafilter and test plain water flow
Start with the portafilter removed and run a short brew cycle. If water flows normally from the group head, the machine itself is moving water and the restriction is probably in the coffee puck or filter basket rather than the pump.
If water does not flow from the group head, continue with the water-supply checks below.
2. Check and reseat the water tank
- Make sure the tank contains enough fresh water.
- Remove the tank and reinstall it firmly so its outlet valve seats correctly.
- If you use the in-tank filter, make sure it is installed correctly and is not overdue for replacement.
- Run another short water cycle with the portafilter removed.
If the machine was recently run dry, moved, or had its tank removed for a long time, it may take a short period of running water through the system before normal flow returns.
3. Compare the group head, hot-water outlet and steam wand
Testing more than one outlet helps narrow the problem:
- All outlets weak or dry: look at the tank, water filter, scale and overall pump/flow system.
- Hot water works but group head does not: inspect the brew path and basket for blockage.
- Group head works but steam/hot water does not: troubleshoot the steam/hot-water circuit separately.
If your hot-water outlet is sputtering rather than completely dry, see our Barista Express hot-water troubleshooting guide.
4. If water flows without coffee, adjust the puck
A very fine grind, an overfilled basket or a blocked filter basket can restrict flow enough that little or no espresso reaches the cup. This is not the same as the machine having no water supply.
- Clean the filter basket and make sure its holes are open.
- Use a normal dose for the basket rather than overfilling it.
- If the shot barely drips, move the grinder slightly coarser.
- Retest and change only one variable at a time.
For a systematic dial-in process, use our Breville Barista Express settings guide.
5. Clean the brew path correctly
Coffee oils and fine particles can restrict the shower screen or basket. Clean the basket, group head and shower screen according to Breville’s maintenance instructions.
The Barista Express also has a cleaning cycle for removing coffee-oil residue. That cleaning cycle is different from descaling: cleaning targets coffee residue, while descaling targets mineral deposits in the water system.
6. Descale when flow is weak across the machine
If several water outlets have gradually become weak, mineral buildup can be part of the problem. Follow the correct model-specific procedure rather than improvising with a strong vinegar mixture.
See our Breville descaling guide for the distinction between cleaning and descaling and the correct maintenance sequence.
What not to do
- Do not open the case and run the machine while exposed.
- Do not remove or manipulate internal valves or pressurized hoses while troubleshooting.
- Do not repeatedly force long brew cycles when the pump sounds abnormal and no water is moving.
When the machine probably needs service
Contact Breville or an authorized repairer if the tank is seated correctly, the machine is clean/descaled, and there is still no water from any outlet. Service is also appropriate if the pump becomes unusually quiet or loud, water leaks from inside the chassis, the machine trips power, or the problem appeared suddenly after an electrical fault.
FAQ
Why does water flow without the portafilter but stop when I brew coffee?
The coffee puck is probably creating too much resistance. Clean the basket, check the dose and move the grind slightly coarser.
Can scale stop water flow?
Heavy scale can restrict flow, especially when several outlets become weak. Descaling will not repair a failed pump or valve, however.
Should I backflush the machine if absolutely no water comes out?
First confirm that the machine can actually move water. A cleaning/backflush cycle is useful for coffee-oil buildup, but it is not the first step when every outlet is completely dry.
