If your Breville Barista Express is leaking water, the first step is to identify exactly where the water appears. A full drip tray, a poorly seated water tank, a leak around the portafilter, and water coming from inside the chassis are different problems and should not be treated the same way.

1. Check the drip tray first
The Barista Express intentionally sends purge and rinse water into the drip tray. That means water in the tray is not automatically a fault. If the tray becomes full, is not seated correctly, or is tipped while being removed, water can appear to be leaking from the bottom of the machine.
- Turn the machine off and let it cool if it has just been steaming.
- Remove and empty the drip tray.
- Clean away coffee grounds or residue that could stop it seating flat.
- Reinstall it fully and run a short test.
2. Inspect and reseat the water tank
If water is appearing at the back or underneath the machine while it is idle, inspect the water tank before assuming there is an internal leak.
- Remove the tank and check it for visible cracks.
- Check that the tank outlet area is clean.
- Refill the tank and watch whether it leaks while sitting off the machine.
- Reinstall it firmly so the tank valve engages correctly.
If the tank itself leaks when removed from the machine, replace the damaged tank rather than trying to seal a crack.
3. Water leaking around the portafilter
A leak around the group head during extraction is different from a leak underneath the machine. Common user-level causes include coffee grounds on the basket rim, an overfilled basket, a portafilter that is not locked in correctly, or a group-head seal that is dirty or worn.
- Remove the portafilter after the machine is no longer pressurized.
- Clean the basket rim and the mating surface around the group head.
- Use an appropriate dose rather than packing coffee above the basket’s practical capacity.
- Lock the portafilter in securely and pull another shot.
If water continues escaping around the portafilter with a clean rim and correctly loaded basket, the group seal may need inspection or replacement.
4. Steam wand or hot-water outlet leaks
A brief amount of condensed water from the steam wand when switching into steam mode can be normal. Continuous dripping when the selector is returned to standby is not the same thing.

5. Can scale cause a leak?
Scale can restrict water paths and contribute to poor flow or valve behavior, but descaling is not a universal cure for every leak. If the machine is due for descaling or several outlets have become weak or irregular, follow the correct maintenance process.

6. Water coming from underneath the chassis
If the drip tray and tank are not the source and water is visibly escaping from cabinet seams or pooling underneath the machine during brewing, steaming or hot-water use, an internal hose, fitting, valve or seal may be leaking.
Do not run the machine with its covers removed. The Barista Express contains mains-voltage electrical components and hot, pressurized water. A persistent internal leak is a service issue.
When to stop using the machine
Switch the machine off, unplug it after it is safe to do so, and arrange service if:
- water reaches the power cord, plug or electrical area;
- water rapidly pools underneath the chassis;
- the machine leaks while sitting idle even after the tank is reseated;
- you smell burning or see electrical faults;
- the leak persists after the user-accessible checks above.
How to prevent common leaks
- Empty and clean the drip tray regularly.
- Keep coffee grounds off the basket rim and group-head sealing surface.
- Reseat the water tank carefully after filling.
